Eureka! moments in science are rare, with most breakthroughs occurring through an accumulation of data and evidence compiled over many years of research and study. This long and costly process inevitably starts with a well-crafted yet unproven theory receiving the necessary funding to explore its full potential.
Prostate Action funds pioneering research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer and prostatitis.
Prevention – to reduce the incidence and ultimately prevent the development of prostate disease
Diagnosis – to investigate new diagnostic tests that are more effective and far less invasive
Treatment – to locate better, more effective treatments that have fewer side-effects
Research projects funded by Prostate Action are already bearing fruit. Research by Professor Ros Eeles has discovered over 20 prostate cancer genes to date. Professor Mark Emberton is running a large four year national study into the use of MRI in diagnosing prostate cancer following a pioneering pilot study funded by Prostate Action.
